The Night of Psychedelica

The Trip (Roger Corman, 1967)

Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980)

The Night of David Cronenberg

“I had a very disturbing dream last night. In the dream I found myself making love to a strange man. Only I’m having trouble because he’s old and dying and smells bad and I find him repulsive. But then he tells me that even old flesh is erotic, that disease is the love of two creatures for one another, that even dying is an act of eroticism, that even to exist is sexual. And I believe him and we make love beautifully.” (from: 'Shivers')

Shivers (They Came From Within, 1975)

"David Cronenberg's first film is one of those little gems in which he already displays his major themes and concerns. Essentially it's a look at society pulled inside out by modern technology. The plot: residents of a technologically advanced hi-rise building are transformed into decadent, violent mirrors of their former selves by parasites which invade the body through sexual contact. Not exactly pleasant stuff, but Cronenberg's chilly, piercing style makes this impossible to turn away from. Cult film fans will also enjoy the presence of Italian horror diva Barbara Steele in one of her most perverse roles." (Mondo Digital)

Crimes of the Future (1970)

Together with 'Stereo', this is the director's first 35mm film. The movie explores themes that would later become his trademarks, namely weird erotica and body horror. 'Crimes of the Future' is set in the future when a disease, stemming from tainted cosmetics, is killing young girls. This eventually descends into perverted sex and body modification, it's Cronenberg of course. The film gives a look into where the director was coming from and it's great to see that these ideas were later refined in films such as 'Videodrome' and 'Dead Ringers'. (Boomkat)

The bar opens at 20:00. Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Membership is only € 4 (including the two movies). Smoking is permitted.

The Night of Blaxploitation

"Look, I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play."

Across 110th Street (1972, Barry Shear)

"Across 110th Street is an early blaxploitation: a gritty police procedural with a strong element of social commentary. Barry Shear's atmospheric direction weaves the many subplots together in a skillful fashion and effectively captures the grimy, claustrophobic feel of the story through a combination of location shooting and mobile, often handheld camera work. Finally, the film's tough but emotional style is sealed by a bittersweet soul score from Bobby Womack. All in all, Across 110th Street is a powerhouse effort that succeeds both as an incisive social drama and an intense police thriller". (allmovie guide)

Superfly (1972, Gordon Parks Jr.)

"A film like this makes you feel cool to be a human. The ability to swing your arms as you walk, to hear that funky beat and put it in your steps. The look of the world of seventies black film is fantastic. The feel for the film is authentic, because well it is authentic. Superfly's outfits rock, as do his hair and sideburns. Oh yeah, and the car. What a cool car! Everything related to Superfly reeks of fun and cool. The bathtub love scene rocks, it was sensual, but not inhuman like most Hollywood sex scenes. These weren't automotons greased for lovemaking, these were two cool cats in a tub of bubbly bath water. And they had Curtis Mayfield assisting with his cool themes. Then there is the startlingly cool still frame montage to the tune of PUSHERMAN, which is one of the coolest Blaxpoitation theme songs. And then you have the dialogue. Well if you thought Quentin Tarantino overused the word "nigger" then you will not want to see this film. The political incorrectness was fantastic." (Ain't It Cool)

The bar opens at 20:00. Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Membership is only € 4 (including the two movies). Smoking is permitted.

The Night of Harmony Korine

Director Harmony Korine (1973) started his career in the film business as the screenplay writer of the highly acclaimed Kids by Larry Clark. Two years later, 24 year old Korine made his prize-winning debut with Gummo, an exceptionally weird collage of a city where there's really nothing to do, except for sniffing glue, killing cats, having sex, riding dirtbikes, listening to black metal, and meeting a cavalcade of quirky, bizarre, and scary people.

And did I mention that it features a black midget who isn't at all interested in the sexual avances of a disturbed guy played by Korine himself?

Two years later, inspired by the Danish Dogme 95 movement, Korine and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle made Julien Donkey-Boy, a powerful, yet quite disturbing portrait of a schizophrenic young man. Along with actress Chloë Sevigny, this one also features Werner Herzog and Will Oldham.

The bar opens at 20:00. Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Membership is only € 4 (including the two movies). Smoking is permitted.

The Night of David Lynch: short films + the pilot episode of 'On the Air'

On the 6th of November you’ll get the privilege of seeing the six short features David Lynch made between 1966 and 1995, including “Six Men Getting Sick,” “The Alphabet,” “The Grandmother,” “The Amputee”, “The Cowboy & The Frenchman” and “Lumière.” These shorts have all been labelled as six genuinely weird, offbeat shorts that define the directors current position as one of the most important voices in today’s American cinema. All movies will be introduced onscreen by David Lynch himself.

In 1992, exactly one year after the highly influential television series Twin Peaks, writer-directors David Lynch and Mark Frost made seven episodes of On the Air, an even more weird and crazy show about the making of a live televison show. The cast includes Twin Peaks actors Miguel Ferrer (FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield), Ian Buchanan (Dick Tremayne) and David L. Lander (Tim Pinkle). Longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti composed the score. 'On the Air' has never been released on DVD.

On november 6th The Night of David Lynch will be a wild and utterly weird evening that is not to be missed by anyone who likes the work of David Lynch. This is your chance to catch up with this lesser known, must-see material from one of the most daring directors around.

The bar opens at 20:00. Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Membership is only € 4 (including the two movies). Smoking is permitted.

La nuit de Michel Gondry

Hypercreative french director Michel Gondry (1963) started his career as a drummer in the band Oui-Oui, for which he also directed the music video's. When Björk saw several of these, she decided to let Gondry direct the video for her debut single 'Human Behaviour'. From then on Gondry made dozens of music video's in which he experimented a lot with all different kinds of image-techniques and even came up with a few new ones.

His first feature movie came out in 2001 and was called 'Human Nature'. Not a big hit, but after this Gondy did get the chance to direct the hugely popular independent movie 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' for which he even won an Oscar in the category Best Original Screenplay. Last year then he hit the big screen with 'The Science of Sleep', a very imaginative and sweet love-story with Gael García Bernal and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

On october 2nd we'll begin our La nuit de Michel Gondry with a digital screening of 'The Science of Sleep', and after a short break we will continue with some of his best musical video's including the ones he did for Björk, Massive Attack, Oui-Oui, The White Stripes and Daft Punk.

The bar opens at 20:00. Screening starts at 20:30. Entrance (including the membership) is only € 4 for the whole evening and drinks are only € 1,50. See you at the Overtoom 301!

It's Darren Aronofsky Night!

This evening will feature two films by director Darren Aronofsky (Brooklyn, 1969). We will begin with his latest, underrated and misunderstood masterpiece The Fountain, which was released in Holland in only 1 copy. So this will be your last chance to see this mesmerizing film about love, death & eternal life on the big screen.

After The Fountain there will be a short break to catch some breath, and then we will continue our evening with the screening of Aronofsky's first feature Pi (π) from 1998. This highly original take on mathematics and obsession has been hailed as one of the most daring independent breakthrough movies ever, and could be described as an otherwordly hallucinatory cyberpunk thriller. Not to be missed.

Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Membership is only € 4 (including the two movies) and beer only € 1,50. Smoking is permitted.

The Night of Edward D. Wood Jr.

In 1994 Tim Burton made this extraordinary biopic of Ed Wood, widely regarded as the worst director of all time, into one of his most personal movies. Johnny Depp gives a truly wonderful performance as the twisted, but loveable Ed Wood. The real star however is Martin Landau, in his Oscar winning role of famous horrorveteran Bela Lugosi.

You'll really appreciate Ed Wood's most 'celebrated' movie more after seeing Burton's biopic. Now you can see what kind of utter rubbish Edward D. Wood Jr. found fit for printing. Without a doubt, Plan 9 From Outer Space is his best because it's his worst. Not to be missed!

Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301. Entrance is only € 4 , and beer € 1,50.

The Night of the Modern Classic: Two Takes on Victimization

Funny Games is one of the most powerful and controversial movies of the late nineties. Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke (La Pianiste, Caché) shows us what's it like to really identify yourself with good guys who are being terrorized by the bad guys. In this case: a happy Austrian family gets a visit from two very unfriendly young boys in their summerhouse by the lake.

For Your Height Only is an undisputed cult classic from 1979, and one of the most funny spoofs ever made. Our superhero is Weng Weng, with his 83 cm. the shortest actor ever to have a lead role. With his self confidence (and a pair of X-Ray glasses) he's the most remarkable good guy you'll ever seen, so beware of this Phillipinian midget madness! We think this quote from one of the bad guys really says it all: "The forces of good are our sworn enemy... they must be exterminated, and I mean lethally!"

Screening starts at 20:30 at the Overtoom 301.

Entrance is only 4 euros!
